Learning The Maintenance Of Microscope
For maintenance, the microscope should be stored in a cool, dry, dust free and acid free place. The appropriate place for storing is a microscope box that is equipped with silica gel, which is hygroscopic, so the environment that surrounds it not humid. Moreover, you can place the lamp in a cupboard to prevent the growth of fungus.
For non-optical microscope part that is made of metal or plastic, it can be cleaned by using a flannel cloth. To clean the dust that stuck in the microscope, you can use a small brush or camera lens brush.
Meanwhile, microscope lens (ocular, objective, and condenser) is cleaned by using lens tissue that is given 70% alcohol. You should never clean the lens by using a handkerchief or cloth.
The residue of immersion oil on objective lens can be cleaned by using xylene. However, you should be careful to use it. Do not let the liquid xylene attached to the non-optical microscope parts because it will damage the paint or damage the plastic material. Also, do not use this liquid to another lens unless the manufacturer states that such action is safe.
Before storing the microscope, it is suggested for you to always clean it, especially to remove all immersion oil on the surface of lens, so the soft particles do not stick and dry. Oil and fine particles on the lens can cause scratches. This matter decreases the ability of the lens. The object that is left on the table of a microscope is a clear sign of negligence/carelessness.
In addition, before storing the microscope, you should set again the table of microscope and keep away the objective lens from the object table by rotating the propulsion device to its original position. The condenser is lowered again, the light intensity is diminished and then turned off (if your microscope is electric microscope).
By complying with instructions for use and maintenance of the microscope, it is hoped that this tool can survive longer to be used on all laboratory activities.
